After breaking into a research centre, some animal rights activists get bitten by violant chimpanzees who have been 'infected'.

The story then moves to the main character Jim who awakes from a coma in a deserted hospital in London. As he wanders out onto the city streets of London, they are totally deserted. (This scene was shot in the very early hours of the morning so as to achieve the 'look' of a deserted city).

As Jim walks through the streets he sees piles of dead bodies and hears murderous screams. He is then chased by infected people baying for his blood. At this point an explosion happens via a makeshift bomb from some fellow survivors who rescue Jim. Selena (a survivor) explains that the infection is spread via blood and that it's affect takes a matter of seconds to 'turn' someone. Selena says the infection has rapidly spread throughout the country and doesn't know if it has spread worldwide or not.

After finding a father and daughter holed up in a flat, they hear that there are some Manchester based soldiers who have the answer to the infection. As they drive up north to Manchester, little do they realise the worst is yet to come.
